Restylane injections are quickly becoming one of the most popular methods for
smoothing wrinkles and sculpting lips. Restylane differs from the many other
injectable fillers on the market today due to its unique chemical composition.
Restylane was produced and marketed in Sweden and has been used in Europe for
several years showing great success in facial rejuvenation.
Currently, Restylane is the only dermal filler approved by the FDA that is
made of a biodegradable hyaluronic acid, a naturally occurring substance present
in all living organisms.
The acid provides volume and fullness to the skin; it
is a clear substance that is injected directly beneath the skin's surface and
typically is used in patients between the ages of 35 and 60.
Though approved for
the treatment of facial wrinkles, Restylane is also used for lip augmentation,
reducing lines around the mouth, and facial contouring. Restylane also modifies
and corrects nasolabial folds.
Restylane injections are performed in your cosmetic surgeon's office with
local anesthesia; patients usually experience some pain and discomfort from the
needle during each injection.
The procedure takes between 5-30 minutes and
patients return home shortly after finishing the procedure.
Swelling may be
quite pronounced for two to three days after your injection, and patients are
advised to stay out of the sun following the injection.
Though Restylane injections are safe and effective to treat moderate
wrinkles, some side effects may occur including redness, tenderness, swelling,
bruising, and mild pain. More serious side effects that may require medical
attention are headache, nausea and flu-like symptoms.
Most patients require only one Restylane injection to achieve their desired
results; however, additional treatments may be required in some patients
depending on age and skin type.
