Purpose:
To change the size and shape of the labia.
The procedure:
This procedure should be carried out by a surgeon with relevant skills and experience in an establishment registered with the Healthcare Commission.
Female genital reshaping is a surgical procedure that normally takes place under general anaesthetic, or local anaesthetic plus sedation. The exact nature of the operation depends on the desired result and what the surgeon recommends, but it can last up to one hour.
Standard genital reshaping simply means reducing the size of the inner labia (the inner genital lips). To do this, the surgeon will cut away the unwanted labia tissue to make the desired shape. Alternatively, they can remove a wedge-shaped section of the labia, leaving the front intact and removing the tissue from behind. This means there is no change in the colour of the labia and makes the surgery less noticeable.
Some surgeons use a laser instead of a scalpel to reduce bleeding.
You may be required to stay in hospital overnight and will need 1 week off work to rest. A high standard of hygiene is important and the sutures will be dissolvable.
Many women dislike the large protuberant appearance of their labia minora. This may cause severe embarrassment with a sexual partner or loss of self-esteem.
Not long ago, labiaplasty was usually only performed within a select group of entertainers and performers—women such as swimsuit models, centerfold models, and women in sex-oriented professions. But today, with the advent of more sexually accepted magazines/videos and apparel, female genitalia are much more on display. Most often, labiaplasty is being done for two reasons… medical… and aesthetic.
Medical reasons for labiaplasty (labia surgery) include the reduction of tissue from overly large or thick labia minora that can result in constant irritation in tight pants and discomfort when engaging in sports or other physical activities. In many of these instances, women are born with large labia—others may develop this condition with childbirth or age. Surgery of the labia represents a relatively safe solution to most medical reasons.
Aesthetic reasons (beautification) are largely being driven by societal evolution regarding sexual habits, wants, and expectations. This is the primary reason driving the market for genital surgery, and is chiefly responsible for the dramatic increase in labiaplasty, as women in everyday life are now demanding more options when it comes to another openly accepted, self-esteem, minor surgical procedure. Most women seek sculpting of the labia, or vaginal beautification to achieve a better look for themselves, and their sexual partner. This can include even age-related enhancement for women who are older and want a return to the youthful look they had when they were in their twenties.
It's widely known that men today are experiencing more open awareness of their sexual problems and needs, (proof of this is in the open advertising and availability of new medications such as Viagra®, Cialis®, Levitra® and others)—women are now feeling the same thing. There is a societal evolution currently occurring about how men and women perceive each other in areas of sexual expectation, SPECIFICALLY when it comes to sexual performance and appearance.
Simply stated, women, like men, want to "look good". This is a perfectly normal self-expectation. Woman today, can usually achieve this prospect through labia reduction surgery, at a reasonable cost.
The results:
The labia will be reshaped to the desired look. The results should be permanent.
The risks:
General risks associated with surgery
After the surgery, the genital area will be swollen and painful and it is therefore likely that you will be unable to have sexual intercourse for six weeks. There is also the risk of infection, permanent colour change and loss of sensation.
Best Candidates:
Women who are either experiencing sexual dysfunction or embarrassment because their labia (labia minora) are over-sized or asymmetrical. Also women who dislike the large size or shape of their labia, which may cause inelegance or awkwardness with a sexual partner.
Length of Surgery:
1 to 2 hours
Recovery:
Labiaplasty is an outpatient procedure usually performed under local anesthesia. After surgery, women may experience some mild discomfort and swelling, which usually disappears completely after 1-2 weeks. The labial incisions usually heal and are rarely noticeable.
Back to Work:
3 to 5 days
